Senate Retreat-
JANUARY 12th, 10:30am - 3pm
Rybolt 230/231 (Rec Center)
ITINERARY
10:30 am - Welcome & Exec Presentations-
From the President: We have done a lot of ground-breaking things this semester. We have provided a reform the Student Conduct Board, fixed Eagles Nest swipe issue, lengthened library hours, and created a motto.
From the Vice President: First Teddy Bear Drive will be in May (will need help coordinating). Proposed reforms to student conduct board (fully implemented next school year). Student Senate website rough draft: minutes, bios, resolutions, questions and concerns. Need a professional-looking photo by Tuesday. Will be going public within the next month.
From the Officer of Academic Affairs: Goal is to have people table a few days before a meeting. On Academic Advising and Retention Committee
From the Officer of Finances and Facilities: Helps facilities know what’s going on. Main goal is working on parking, fixing lots, student center student spots. Wi-Fi improvements. Mail center should be open more and more accessible.
From the Officer of Student Affairs: Looking at the handbook and revising it. Student handbook review assignments. Handbook access: Au website > Current Students > Student Conduct, on google drive. Propose change or put it in Jordan’s committee. Dr. Pool wishes to pass as many changes as possible. Talk to constituents and listen to their concerns.
From the Office of Judicial Affairs: Make the relationship between Student Senate and the student body: outreach chair. Put motto in constitution. Move elections earlier in April so we know who the next incoming senators are before the first meeting they have in office. Mentor those who take your position.
From the Officer of Residence Life: For hall reps- last year we had hall councils. Since last semester that is no longer a thing. Hall reps are still on senate. We are thinking of rewriting their positions in the Constitution and define their roles. We would also like to open line of communication to accessibility services center, Sylvia. What should we tell our hall reps to tell the halls? Tell RAs about our open house. Posters. Hall Rep emails people.
Door decs: name, position, email, tab. Put one in the commuter lounge for Sky.
Ohio Student Senate Government Summit: 2/9, 9 AM-3 PM. University of Akron, Register by 2/1, $35. If you are thinking of running for an executive position, you should go, but it is not required.
Studio art- two sections, one core, one major/minor- not count for core. Music majors, none count toward core. Can appeal individual case.
11:00 am - Group breakout 1
11:30 am - Dr. Pool: Leadership segment
12:00 pm - Group breakout 2
Swipe access for commuters during visiting hours. Commuters cannot access honors office in Clayton. Is it a safety issue? Inconsistency: some commuters can get into buildings while others cannot. RAs and hall presidents need to collaborate. ACs from each building to come to a senate meeting to define role of hall reps and RAs. Talking to ACs from each building to see if hall reps can go to weekly staff meeting. Learn big building problems. RAs have small, room-level problems. ARDs and ACs should be in communication with hall presidents.
12:30 pm - Lunch: Convo (Volunteers please swipe those w/o meal plan)
1:45 pm - Group breakout 3
Writing resolution to allow lizards in dorms. Policies that people don’t agree with are in different handbooks (housing, organization) that are not student handbooks. Open convo and nest (on Fri) later (show student support for resolving this issue). University requires meal plan but has inconvenient hours. At least keep Nest open later on Friday (people are still on campus). Nest Deli should be open later. We should table and have petitions for certain issues. Suggestion for convo hours (by where trays put away), email or call. Idea of how to address where people can park. Freshmen don’t know where to park. Work with Oteam with presentation about parking lots. Facilities should set specific lots more defined by what buildings they are close to. Freshmen who live in Kem and Stutz should not have to park in Lot B. Facilities should also define where staff can park. Do we have more people on campus than we have spots? We have enough parking for people who register to park; it’s just about getting people in the right spots. Charges for classes: Online classes get charged a lab fee. Because it’s a book fee, it can’t be added onto your course fee. Students should know the book fee before they get into class. The book store doesn’t know what professors are going to pick. Books are a little cheaper with redshelf, could potentially pay for with loans. Aesthetics core: studio arts- 160 counts, but 200 level do not. Major students cannot sign up for core studio art classes. Email McBrayer to see what he thinks and then write a resolution. Auxiliary services should address the amount of swipes a senior commuter meal plans have. It is cheaper for a commuter to eat at Subway every day than to have a swipe plan. If you go to convo for anything but dinner you might as well pay for it with a debit card.
2:00 pm - Dr. Campo: Ashland Rising
A lot of first generation students are at Ashland, almost 40%. AU wants a more diverse population.
2:30 pm - Committees
3:00 pm - Adjourn
